Want better concentration, improved coping skills? Meditate.

Most of my clients can tell you that I’m a big fan of meditation. It was an invaluable tool for me while I was studying for my licensing exams, and has been helpful in my own efforts to manage stress, anxiety, & reactivity in my life.

This article from ABC news talks about some new research from Yale University on the benefits of meditation. From the story:

“Meditation isn’t a cure for mental illness, Brewer said, but he said his study suggests that there may be a neurological basis for the benefits that many meditators report — increased awareness, improved concentration, and a better ability to deal with the cognitive and emotional stresses of modern life.”

I know some of you are busy enough that the idea of finding even 20 minutes a day seems a bit much, but I’m willing to bet that over time, you’ll save more than 20 minutes a day with the improved concentration and decreased conflict in your life.

If you want a starting point for learning about meditation, I (really!) recommend “Meditation for Dummies”, by Stephen Bodian. Great ‘survey course’ on meditation, and an easy read.
